Overhead # 2 - "What is the Internet"
- A vast global network of networks that spans the globe
- Millions of computers connected via high speed communications lines
- Connected by Internet protocol- a common language so different computers can communicate
- Been around for 26 years-started by Defense Department("ARPANet")
- 1983 split- MILnet and NFSnet-National Science Foundation
- Evolved into today's INTERNET- 90% private companies funded

- "Web"- caused explosion of growth-like black & white to color TV
- May 10-57 million people worldwide- 273,000 web sites

Overhead # 5 - Parts of a Web Address
- Just introduce concept of URL ( Universal Resource Locator). It's the address for a site on the Web and most common way of using Internet. You can use the address to go to specific site or jump between linked sites. If you click on an underlined word in blue, you will go to another site. This moving between sites is called " surfing the net" A later session will cover this in greater depth.
