GLOSSARY OF E-MAIL TERMS

  • Bounce - Email returned to sender for various reasons.
  • Carbon Copy (CC)- email feature which allows user to send an originai message to someone other than originai recipient
  • Domain Name - all computers on Internet have assigned unique names to ensure email and other information goes to and from the right computers.
  • Email - allows users to send and receive messages to each other over the Internet, usually in text form. All computers users with access to the Internet use emali.
  • Email address - every user has their own unique email address. You might obtain one at home from a commerciai onune service or through a locaì Internet service provider. At school, contact the school's technology coordinator.
  • Email program - the software by which users send and receive electronic messages. Exampìes are Eudora or MCI Mail.
  • Infobot - or maiìbot, an emali address that automatically returns information requested by the user
  • Keypals - emali penpaìs.
  • Listserv - an interactive email message base addressing a particular topic or interest
  • Logon or login - to sign onto a computer system
  • Mailing Iist - a topic-oriented message base that can be read and posted to using emaiì.
  • Message Header - the top portion of an email message, composed of: To:, From:, Subject:, CC:, BCC:, and Attachment Fields.
  • Message Body - the large bìank space below the message header where you type your message.
  • Online - when you're Iogged onto a computer through your modem.
  • Server - computer available for use on the Internet
  • Signature - feature of email program that automaticaììy attaches the user name, email address, and any personaìized notations to electronic messages.
  • User account - the connection given to the user through some Internet service provider, denoted by a username, emaiì address, and password.
  • User id - unique user identity or address assigned to the user when registering to access a teìecommunications service. Appears before the @ in an emaiì address.
