Newsgroups - An online discussion of a specific topic. Topics are widely varied and messages are not edited in any way when submitted. Some type of newsreader and some advanced knowledge is needed to join in.
Listserv - Another type of online discussion which Is conducted via email. Lists may be moderated, which involves a person in charge who effectively edits the content, or unmoderated. Participation requires only email, which will become quite heavy in volume.
Post - Send a message to a newsgroup or list.
Iurker - One who follows but does not participate in a discussion.
FTP - File Transfer Protocol-A standard used to transfer data from one computer to another, or the program used to make the transfer. Files may be software or text.
Download - Transfer of a file from a remote computer to a local computer. Upload is the reverse.
Search engines - Powerful searching tools which periodically scan the contents of the Web and build indexes of the pages. They allow users to find relevant information.
