A Plan for Staff In-Service

PERFORMING A SEARCH ON THE WORLD WIDE WEB
- Choose any of the search engines in Netscape by clicking on "Net Search".
- A box will appear in which to type your keyword. The more focused your keyword the more likely you will have a successful search. Type in your search terms.
- You may refine your search by using "and", "or", or "not" by pulling down a small box and choosing one. This is called Boolean logic.
- You may limit your search by categories in most search engines. For example, you can search for "Ecology" only in the Education category or on the whole Web.
- You may also change the number of "hits" returned to as few as 10 or as many as 500. The more hits you specify the wider the search and the longer it may take.
- After you've typed in your word and chosen your options, click on "Search" and you've begun. It should only take a few seconds to complete.
- Some of the sites may return your hits with a percentage at the beginning. This is how the engine views the relevance of the material to your query.
